| Description |
English: Standing alongside State Street at the south entrance to Elton Park in the village of Bloomfield, New York, the Elton Memorial Arch was gifted to the town in 1904 by James S. Elton - a prominent businessman and financier who served as president of the Waterbury National Bank of Connecticut, but whose childhood roots lay in Bloomfield - in honor of his wife Charlotte. A showpiece of Neoclassical grace, the gate is built of brick accented with smoothly polished granite, framed by a pair of stout Doric columns and an entablature and capped off with ornamentation that includes a pair of urns and a carved finial stone, flanked by decorative scroll buttresses and engraved with the words ELTON PARK. At left in the background looms the 45-foot Civil War Memorial that is the centerpiece of the park. As seen in January 2022. |
