On February 2 1901, the funeral of Queen Victoria took place. She had died a few days earlier on January 22. Her funeral was held on Saturday, 2 February, in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, and after two days of lying-in-state, she was interred beside Prince Albert in Frogmore Mausoleum at Windsor Great Park. As she was laid to rest at the mausoleum, it began to snow. Queen Victoria was the longest serving monarch in the history of the British Monarchy, a reign of 63 years and 7 months.

Memorials for Queen Victoria were held right across the British Empire. In Wellington, New Zealand, a memorial service took place at Parliament. The picture shown here is of the crowds gathering at Parliament for the service. The image is found in a collection of miscellaneous photos transferred to Archives New Zealand by the Department of Internal Affairs. The photographer is unknown. However, a very similar image is held by the National Library of New Zealand, taken by J. Aston of Vivian Street, Wellington natlib.govt.nz/records/23195021
