DescriptionMemorial plaque to the three sons of Brig-Gen Owen Thomas - geograph.org.uk - 1256928.jpg |
English: Memorial plaque to the three sons of Brig-Gen Owen Thomas. Owen Thomas of Brynddu was appointed head of Lloyd George's Welsh Army with the rank of Brigadier-General. This was increasingly a conscripted army - the bulk of those recruited being drafted into the 20 or so battalions of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Despite the huge of loss of lives, I never heard any criticism from the older generation of Owen Thomas - possibly because of his own personal losses. In contrast, his Chaplain in Chief, the prominent Calvinist minister, Rev Dr Colonel John Williams, Brynsiencyn, who used to preach in uniform urging men to join up to fight for the rights of small nations, was after the war regarded with great opprobrium.
