DescriptionMemorial to Battle of Philiphaugh, 13th September 1645 - geograph.org.uk - 1047590.jpg |
English: Memorial to Battle of Philiphaugh, 13th September 1645 This cairn, some 20 feet high and covered in creeper, was erected in memory of only the Covenanters killed at the battle. It is extremely partisan since very few were killed whilst many hundreds of the Royalist army were killed in battle and many more, who surrendered under terms of quarter, were slaughtered in cold blood afterward. There is an oppressive atmosphere in this gloomy spot.Trenches dug by the Royalists can still be seen nearby. It stands in the private Philiphaugh Estate a little N of the tennis court. |
