DescriptionMemorial to a promising young man - geograph.org.uk - 1144786.jpg |
English: Memorial to a promising young man This young clergyman, the reverend T.D.James, seems to have died at the start of a his career and was followed to the grave by his mother only two weeks after.
The school in which he taught at Gelligaer near Merthyr Tydfil was endowed in 1715 by a local landowner, Edward Lewis, who "bequeathed seven tenements and also the interest of £1600, for the support of a master to teach fifteen poor boys ... and for clothing and apprenticing them." It subsequently became a National School. In 1849 Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary stated: "The school connected with the charity is situate in the village of Gellygaer, with a good schoolroom in the lower part, and a residence above for the master, who has a salary of £50 a year, with a garden, and a supply of coal. The books used in the school are those sanctioned by the National Society, but the scholars are allowed to attend the Sunday schools and places of worship selected by their parents. The children of parishioners are admitted on the written recommendation of two parishioners, for four years; the scholars have a suit of clothes annually, and on quitting the school are apprenticed with a premium of £8, a further sum of £5 being given to the apprentice on his producing from his master a certificate of good behaviour at the close of his term. There are now thirty boys in the school." From: 'Gelly - Glyn', A Topographical Dictionary of Wales (1849), pp. 358-385.
