English: Memorial to the Catholic Recusant, Sion Dafydd Rhys Sion Dafydd Rhys, (also known as John Davies), born at Llanfaethlu in 1534, was very much a renaissance man. Educated at both Oxford University and the University of Siena, Italy, he held doctorates in medicene and divinity and practised as a doctor and a teacher. He was for a time headmaster of the Friars School, Bangor. He was also a prominent Latin, Greek and Welsh grammarian. In 1592 he published his magnum opus Cambrobrytannicae Cymraecaeve linguae institutiones et rudimenta. Following the discovery of a secret Catholic printing press at his home, he sought refuge on the Continent where he died c.1619. |
