Description |
English: Caption information source: The Great Fire of June 6, 1889 was a significant turning point in Seattle's history and changed both the physical and political landscapes of the City. The fire completely consumed 100 acres of Seattle's business district and waterfront. The city didn't take much time to mourn; most businesses decided to rebuild where they had been, and quickly set up tents to continue operating while rebuilding.
In this image taken after the fire, a group of men pose on the street next to a tent temporarily housing the Jewel Saloon, which is flying a large American flag. Rubble and additional tents can be seen in the background, along with the steeple of a still-standing church. According to city directories, Proprietor Olof Peter Dahlquist (1848-1903) reopened the saloon on or about the same location as before the fire, near Pioneer Square, on the south side of Yesler Avenue (now Yesler Way) between Commercial Street (now First Avenue South) and Second Avenue.
