Summary edit

Description

While the Ponton was the bread-and-butter 1950s Mercedes-Benz, the company continued to produce high-performance vehicles. The 1955 300SL was very well regarded - and even today is very well sought after.

Mercedes-Benz model names through 1993 were quite simple. A 3-digit number denoted engine displacement. They could sometimes be followed by letter(s) - "SL" together would indicate a sports car, while D would be diesel, C would be coupe, E would be gasoline fuel injection, S would be "Super" denoting a large luxury model, T would indicate "Touring" (station wagon), and L would mean extended long wheelbase on an S (it would be designated SEL, with fuel injection E, to distinguish from SL). For many owners, higher number meant more bragging rights due to a larger, more powerful engine and the higher price tag.

The expanded product portfolio, including smaller cars and utilities, necessitated retiring this scheme, however. Every model now has a lettered class, with the 3-digit engine displacement number following the class letter. As every gasoline model now features fuel injection, the E is meaningless, and now is instead used as a class label.
