English: An unidentified Metroline bus of the AV class, pictured heading east along the Strand operating London Buses route 4 en route to Waterloo station. It has only just entered the Strand, with the statue in the background being the Temple Bar griffin marking the end of Fleet Street. The AV class were Volvo Olympian double-deckers with Alexander RH-type bodywork. By the registration letters P---MBY, this bus was in the 1996 batch bought by Metroline, numbered AV1-AV22. A second batch followed in 1998, in the S--RLE series, numbered AV23-AV38. (Neither batch were numbered in a fully consecutive series). The AV class lasted with Metroline until 2008, but only some of them worked the number 4, based out of Holloway garage, and only then for a relatively short period, from May 2003 to December 2005, having replaced older V class buses on the route (1993/4 Volvo Olympians with Northern Counties Paladin II bodies, inherited with the purchase of MTL London), and then being replaced themselves in favour of low floor buses.
