Description The Metropolitan Avenue Bridge, a bascule bridge over English Kills (the east end of Newtown Creek), with its bascule span opened for a ship. This view, from a ship passing under the bridge, shows the side-by-side pair of west bascule-span leaves and the bridge tender house. The bridge, which carries both Metropolitan Avenue and Grand Street, was built in 1931–32 and opened in March 1933, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. It was refurbished in 1992.
