The famousGuadalajara ware comes from the potteries in this village,which turn out all sorts of water-jars-and bottles in variousbeautiful shapes. They also make little figures represent-ing almost every phase of Mexican life, such as water-carriers, cargadores, mule-drivers, vaqueros or cowboys,colored most cleverly and wonderfully modelled. This, at some points, hasa depth of nearly three thousand feet, and as climate inMexico depends entirely upon altitude, this freak of natureenables Guadalajara, situated in the temperate zone, tohave the climate and fruits of the tropics only six milesaway, large quantities of bananas, cocoanuts and otherhot-land fruits being grown in the depths of the barranca.In the higher lands adjacent to the city the fruits and vege-tables of temperate lands are grown the year round, so thatthe people of Guadalajara are provided with a bountifulsupply of good things for the table.
