Title
Middle Saxon pin.
Description
English: Middle Anglo-Saxon silver pin with polyhedral head in the form of a cube with the corners cut off, creating triangular and lozengiform facets. Five of the six lozengiform facets are engraved with the same geometric design, inlaid with niello which is now partially missing, consisting of a lozengiform border around a diagonal cross, each arm extending to the centre of one of the lozenge's sides. The incomplete circular-sectioned shaft extends from the sixth lozengiform facet and there is a collar at the junction of shaft and head. The triangular facets are undecorated.

The shaft is broken at a bend; this bend is found on many middle Anglo-Saxon pins and so may have occurred in antiquity. The break is clearly not recent, but may not be contemporary with the loss of the pin as it is irregular and shows little sign of wear.

Surviving length 20mm. Length of head 8mm. Width 6 x 6mm. Weight 2.4g.

There are many examples of middle Anglo-Saxon pins with collars, polyhedral heads and niello inlay, both in copper-alloy and in silver. Two particularly similar examples to this one were recorded from 'Near Woodbridge', Suffolk (SF-E0A036), Reepham, Norfolk (NMS-6D1F68) and Wendling, Norfolk (NMS-4C1868, NHER56937). It dates to the 8th or 9th century.
