| Description |
English: Midland Metro terminus with tram 15, Snow Hill Railway Station. Ten years after it opened in 1999, the Midland Metro still has only one line running between here and Wolverhampton. The system has never fulfilled expectations in a number of ways, and at the moment is probably the least successful of all the UK's "second generation" tramways. Many plans for expansion have got nowhere, and the trams themselves have had technical problems, and are shorter than desired because costs had to be cut. Now it seems there is real hope that the system can be expanded by extensions to New Street Railway Station, in Birmingham, and a town centre loop in Wolverhampton. The present 16 Ansaldo Breda trams would be replaced by a new fleet of up to 25 longer trams. 1471393. |
