Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment Caisson Platoon, and the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for U.S. Army Air Forces Lt. Col. Addison Baker in Section 78 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Sept. 14, 2022.

Baker was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Romania during World War II. During Operation Tidal Wave, he piloted a B-24D Liberator and served as commander of the 93rd Bomb Group. Their mission was to bomb the enemy-held oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, Romania, also known as “Hitler’s Gas Station”. His plane was hit by enemy fire during the operation, but Baker refused withdraw and break formation. Baker and his crew pressed on, dropping their bombs with devastating effect before crashing. Baker’s remains could not be identified after the crash and he was listed as Missing in Action. After 79 years, his remains were accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

His nephew, David Baker, received the U.S. flag from his funeral service.
