Summary edit

Description
English: Mill race at Forge Bridge - 1. Looking west from the bridge. Forge mills for smelting iron ore were established here in the 16th century. This race fed one of the last forges, where iron was smelted by using local wood charcoal (which led to severe depletion of local forest). The site was finally abandoned in 1814-5 and very little evidence of the mills remains today. Some Tudor forge cinder has been found, there is some overgrown collapsed stonework and also evidence of a forge built into the southern bridge abutment. Some cast iron grave slabs produced from here can be seen in Burrington churchyard, the earliest being 1619. One of the headstones there (see 1258415 and other pictures) is for ironmaster Richard Knight, who ran the Bringewood forges in the 18th century.
