| Description |
English: Mingary Castle This 14th century castle was built in a strong strategic position guarding the northern approach to the Sound of Mull, illustrating that in those days the sea roads were highly important. The walls are 25 feet high and there is a deep ditch protecting it on the landward side. This was a stronghold of the MacIan's of Ardnamurchan, supporters of the MacDonalds ,Lords of the Isles. However, King James IV used it as his base in his campaign against the Lords of the Isles. Later, in the 17th century, Covenanters were imprisoned here. |
