DescriptionMiniature painting of Samuel B. Webb by Charles Willson Peale.jpg |
English: Samuel B. Webb by Charles Willson Peale. Painting, watercolor on ivory, gold. Miniature mounted on gold bracelet with hinge; hanging loop added later. Overall: 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 in. ( 3.8 x 3.2 cm ). Current Owner: Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum. Gift of Colonel G. Creighton Webb. Note: Webb was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, a descendant of Richard Webb of Gloucestershire, England, who settled in Boston in 1632 and moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in 1635. He fought in the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brigadier general. He was one of the original thirteen officers who met at the Verplanck House in Fishkill, New York, in 1783 to form the Society of the Cincinnati, and when Washington was inaugurated president, Samuel Webb was the grand marshal of the proceedings. Peale painted the miniature in 1779 and pronounced it "one of his best likenesses." Webb presented the miniature to his fiancée, Catherine Hogeboom, in 1790, at which time the badge of the Order of the Cincinnati and the star on his shoulder strap was added (New-York Historical Society). |
