Title
Minutes of Debates in Council on the Banks of the Ottawa River
Description
This 22-page pamphlet purports to be a translation of the minutes of debate at the council held on the banks of the Maumee River (identified on the title page as "The Ottawa River, commonly called the Miamia of the Lake") around 1791. It measures 5.5" x 8.66" (14 x 22 cm). The minutes are believed to have been written by Alexander McKee, a Pennsylvanian who worked as an agent for the British Indian Department and was trusted by the American Indians. The minutes consist of addresses by prominent chiefs, who advise against making peace with the Americans. They cite European Americans' continued encroachments on American Indian lands and failure to abide by previous agreements as reasons to continue fighting.
