  • Significance: Founded in 1771, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was the fourth of 21 Franciscan missions established in California during the years 1769-1823. Distinctively fortress-like in appearance, the Mission San Gabriel church was constructed between 1794-1805 and is thought to be the oldest intact building of stone construction in southern California. The mission's adobe convento (missionaries' quarters) was constructed circa 1812. One of the most famous architectural features of all the California missions, Mission San Gabriel's espadaña (belfry wall), was constructed sometime between 1812 and 1827.
