English: MKPOKITI (Igbo traditional dance group that conquered the world)

When one speaks about igbo traditional dance, it is atilogwu that comes to mind, but it was "mkpokiti" dance that put Nigeria and igbo cultural dance on the world stage. Mkpokiti dance was founded in 1959 by Chief okoli Nwankwo of umunze village in orumba anambra state. In 1970 all the states in Nigeria were summoned to lagos by General Gowon to celebrate the end of the civil war, among the programmes lined up was a cultural dance competition with £3,000 as cash price for first place.The competition started from village to state then landed to Lagos where "mkpokiti" secured the first position. The success of the "mkpokiti" dance group stimulated the formation of several cultural dance group across the country. Nigerian federal government adopted "mkpokiti" dance group from anambra state and made it a national dance group. "Mkpokiti" went on to represent Nigeria at FESTAC-77 in Lagos , Brazil, new York, Barbados, Cuba where she won the best cultural dance group from Africa. At the global cultural dance competition in Wembley and Oxford University England, "mkpokiti" secured 1st position and brought the world to Nigeria. "Mkpokiti" has created a record as an African cultural group that has been to all parts of the world Australia. These achievements and winning the world cup in cultural dance multiple times in New York, north Korea and Algeria crowned the legendary"mkpokiti" dance of NDI-IGBO the greatest cultural dance group in the world. Igbos are always first and the best in whatever they lay their hands..
