The southern third(Macedonia) was left as apart of the Turkish empire; themiddle third (Eastern Eoumelia) was partly returned tothe Sultan, who was, however, to rule it through a Christiangovernor responsible to the Powers; and only the northerndivision (between the Balkan and the Danube) was left thepractical independence Eussia had won for it, with liberty tochoose its own prince. This shameful surrender of the half-freed Christian popula-tions left ancient Thrace and the southern part of old Mace-donia still in Turkish hands, and postponed indefinitely thefinal settlement of the Eastern Question.
