References Possible direct inspiration for the work is the painting by Joos van Cleve in the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. Albrecht Dürer's Saint Jerome in Lisbon, painted in 1521, captured the fascination of Netherlandish artists, who reproduced his model on an almost industrial scale.
