Los ríos Alcoa y Baça y su confluencia determinaron el origen del nombre de esta ciudad. En ella se encuentra una Abadía cisterciense de las mas bellas del mundo. El primer Rey de Portugal, Alfonso Enriquez prometió , en 1.147, fundar un monasterio abadía si conseguía tomar Santarem; la entregó, en 1.153 a los Cirtercienses. La Iglesia termino de construirse en 1.253. Esta Abadía está ligada a una historia de amor. Doña Constanza de Castilla, casada con Don Pedro de Portugal, tenia en su corte una doma de honor: Doña Inés de Castro, de quien se enamoró Don Pedro. A la muerte de Doña Constanza, Doña Inés se reunió con Don Pedro en Coimbra pero fue asesinada el 7 de enero de 1.355. Esta muerte no la evito el Rey Alfonso IV pues tenia problemas con los Reyes de Castilla por cuanto había sucedido. Mas a la muerte de Alfonso IV, Don Pedro se alzó en armas perdiendo una batalla en Oporto. Dos años después, era coronado Rey y entonces realizó un ajuste de cuentas con todos los nobles, anunció que estaba casado con Doña Inés de Castro , de forma secreta, , ordenó exhumar el cadáver de Doña Inés, coronándola, y muerta y descompuesta como estaba, obligó a todos los nobles a besar su mano y tras ello organizó un cortejo a la Abadía de Alcobaça.Esta historia de amor fue motivo de inspiración para la obra de Henry de Montherlant , La reina muerta, escrita en 1.942, si bien, el tema había sido abordado también por Camoens en Os Lusiadas y por Ferreira en su tragedia Castro . |
