|||||||||||||||||
Description |
Joshua, a native assistant of Zeisberger, and an elder in the first church of Gnadenhutten, arrived at Schoenbrunn with a party of Mohicans from the Mission on Beaver River, Pennsylvania, September 18, 1772. On September 24, he laid out Upper Town, on the west side of the river, four miles from Schoenbrunn. When Upper Town was abandoned, Joshua, on October 9, 1772, began to build and settle Gnadenhutten. He died in August 1775. This monument, in the cemetery of Gnadenhutten, re-erected in 1909, is said to be the oldest memorial in the State of Ohio. |
