Description

St Mary's Church, Clapham, Sussex, set into floor before the high altar, monumental brass of Sir John Shelley (d.1526) and of his wife Elizabeth de Michelgrove (d.1513), daughter and heiress of John de Michelgrove of Michelgrove in the parish of Clapham, Sussex, by his wife Beatrice (Sidney ?). He displays the arms of Shelley on his tabard, with shield of Shelley above, whilst his wife displays on her mantle Shelley on her right side (dexter, viewer's left) and on her left side (sinister, viewer's right): arms of de Michelgrove of Michelgrove in the parish of Clapham, Sussex: Quarterly or and azure, a falcon close argent, with shield of Michelgrove above. Centre top: an image of the Holy Trinity with God the Father enthroned wearing a triple tiara, holding God the Son crucified between His knees, with the dove of the Holy Spirit above. Speech scrolls: in Latin: Omnis spiritus laudet dominum (transcribed by Robert Hutchinson F.S.A., The Brasses and Monuments in St. Mary the Virgin Church, Clapham, West Sussex [1]) (Psalms 150:5, usually given as omne quod spirat laudet dominum) ("let everything that hath breath praise the Lord"). Also two shields at their feet: under John Shelley: Shelley impaling Michelgrove, under Elizabeth de Michelgrove: Michelgrove impaling Sidney (Or, a pheon azure).

Inscribed in Latin below:

Orate pro animab(u)s Joh(ann)is Shelley armigeri et Elyzab(e)th(ae) uxoris eius fili(a)e (et) heredis Joh(ann)is Michilgrove de Michilgrove armigeri qu(a)e quidem Elyzabeth(a) obiit penultimo die Julii a(nn)o Regni regis henrici viii quinto et a(nno) d(omi)ni mcccccxiii et predictus Joh(ann)es shelley obiit iiio (i.e. tertio) die Januarii A(nno) Regni regis henrici viii xviiio(i.e. duodevicensimo) anno domini Mccccc vicesimo sexto
which may be translated as:
"Pray ye all for the souls of John Shelley Esquire and of Elizabeth his wife, daughter and heiress of John Michelgrove of Michelgrove, Esquire, which certain Elizabeth died on the last day of July in the year of the reign of King Henry VIII the fifth and in the year of our Lord the 1513th and the aforesaid John Shelley died on the 3rd day of January in the year of the reign of King Henry VIII the 18th, in the year of our Lord the 1526th"
