This type issimilar to the fiddle-back chasuble of the late Roman use,or still more closely to the Benedictine scapular. But the formused by theclergy afterthe fifth cen-tury — and wemay supposethat it was thesame whichwas commonto all thehigher classes— had a muchmore dignifiedappearance.It was roundor elliptical inshape, fallingdown on eachside well overthe arms, thesame shape, infine, whichwas used inthe Churchthroughoutthe MiddleAges. The Romanmonumentsrepresent nu-merous varie-ties of thepsenula whichneed not be particularly described here, since they have no relation to thespecifically clerical type.
