Description This mosaic fragment in the museum of Evora was found inside the city. In the ancient Roman world, Moray eels were considered a delicacy and were raised in large artificial ponds. In writings from the Julio-Claudian era (including such luminaries as Nero and Caligula), there are references to banquets in which one of the dishes was Moray eel that had been fed on human flesh. Ugh... not a style of cooking to be repeated. Actually, while Moray Eels were quite popular, I have never read an account by anyone who liked the taste. Instead, they seemed to be one of those "trendy" foods that caught on because they were so expensive and thus showed the wealth of the person serving them. Next to the mosaic is an ancient Roman bust.
