DescriptionMossdale Scar and Caverns. - geograph.org.uk - 565328.jpg |
English: Mossdale Scar and Caverns. On the morning of Saturday June 24, 1967 a party of 10 cavers entered the Mossdale system. About three hours later four of these gave up. When one of these four returned a short time afterwards she found that the entrance was submerged. It meant that those inside were in great danger and she set off to run the four kilometres across the moor to raise the alarm.
The flooding prevented the rescuers gaining immediate access and they had to divert the stream away from the cave entrance. Even then the rescue operation could not be started owing to the high internal water levels. It was not until the following day that entry was possible, the team eventually finding five of the bodies in the Far Marathon Crawls. The sixth was located the following day. It was decided to bury the six in the High Level Cavern and seal off the system as a permanent tomb for the cavers. This remains the worst tragedy in British caving. A memorial plaque can be seen mddle left of pic and Mossdale Beck can be seen to the right. For more info see: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/viewarticle.aspx?sectionid=1297&articleid=810151 |
