Summary edit

Description

English: Argon Pedion, „Nestani-Saga-Polje“ in the Arcadian highlands (Peloponnese). Motorized pumps serve nowadays for irrigation in the dry period. In case of heavy winter rains floods can retard cultivation even today. The northern parts of the polje, which are never flooded are mainly cultivated by the village Saga. Old irrigation wells, scattered over the polje, are now unused.
The closed Karst basin is solely drained by a single Katavortha (Greek term for ponor). Lake and ponor are already described by the ancient Pausanias (110-180 AD) in his “Description of Greece”, He named the field “untilled plain” (Greek: Argon Pedion).

Deutsch: Argon Pedion, „Nestani-Saga-Polje“ in Arkadien.
