Summary edit

Description
English: An example of the earliest version of the lMG 08 "Spandau" World War I German aircraft machine gun, with the overly-slotted cooling barrel that made it a physically fragile weapon in front-line use.
Date
Source WORLD WAR I AERO Issue #154 (November 1996), Pg. 42 as a cropped version of "photo 6-14" on that page.
Author unknown, photos for "Synchronizers Pt.6" article by Hank Volker are stated as from the collection of the late Peter M. Grosz, and the original photo is dated about 1915-1916.

This earliest version of the lMG 08 was said to be out of service by early 1916 - it is mounted on an uncovered Fokker E.II or E.III Eindecker fuselage framework, to illustrate the Stangensteuerung synchronizer gear in operation, and is fitted with an earlier model Oberursel U.0 seven cylinder rotary engine for demonstration purposes.
