Summary edit

Description
English: Mouth of the River Adur An artificial cut made in 1818 and stabilised by the building of the inner and outer breakwaters. The original mouth of the Adur was south of the current town centre of Shoreham but was gradually shifted eastwards by the growth of a spit so that the mouth reached Fishersgate in 1698 and Hove by 1762. A number of artificial cuts were tried, one here in 1760 that closed in 1762 by shifting shingle, another south of Southwick which is marked on Yeakell & Gardner's map of 1783, that shifted eastwards to Portslade until that was closed in 1815 in order to build this cut which has been the mouth ever since.
