Description
English: Mrs Padfield's class, Congo, ca. 1900-1915
  • Black and white lantern slide showing a group of Congolese boys, aged from around four to twelve years of age, sitting on the wooded steps of a Congo-Balolo Misison building.
  • The boys wear shirts and shorts, although one boy in the front row of the picture is bare-chested.
  • The slide is captioned: "MRS PADFIELD'S CLASS." Charles Padfield and his wife were early Congo-Balolo Mission missionaries working in the early twentieth century at the Baringa mission station.
  • This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo-Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
