editDescriptionMt Ruapehu, New Zealand (ruapehu).jpg |
English: On March 18, a volcanic mudflow (lahar) was reported on the east flank of Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand. The lahar traveled down the Whangaehu Valley, past the Tongariro catchment, and then continued on to the Tangiwai Bridge, site of the 1953 Tangiwai disaster. At that time, a similar lahar damaged the bridge just before a passenger train passed by. Over 150 people were killed in the ensuing derailment, as the train fell into the river. Last week's event was contained by concrete channels, and caused minimal damage. This March 25 ASTER image covers an area of 23.2 x 24.9 km, and is located at 39.3 degrees south latitude, 175.6 degrees east longitude. |
