Description
English: Mummy portrait from Fayum, Hawara cemetery, in modern-day Egypt. Thin lime (Tilia species) panel with encaustic mummy portrait of head and shoulders of a dark-haired young woman, in a brown robe, wearing gold earrings and a simple necklace. "Isarous" is written in Greek across the background. Analysis revealed beeswax a binding medium. Early second century AD. Excavated by Flinders Petrie. Analysed by Jodrell Laboratory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and National Gallery. Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, London. With thanks to the Petrie Museum, UCL.
