Murray Carleton was the nephew of Lee Carleton, who also played in the 1904 Olympic golf tournament and was later President of Glen Echo Country Club. Murray Carleton joined the family business, Carleton Dry Goods, and eventually became President of that firm. Carleton was a director of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company.

Shortly before Carleton’s death in 1959, he was accused of making false financial statements and misleading his clients by cooking the company books, and was indicted by a grand jury. Prior to that time, Carleton was known in St. Louis as a pillar of the business community and for his financial probity. He died before the case went to trial.
