Description
Français : Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (Gard, Languedoc, France), musée Pierre de Luxembourg, Vierge à l'Enfant en ivoire sculptée dans une défense d'éléphant entre 1310 et 1330, probablement commandée pour Arnaud de Via (mort en 1335), neveu du pape Jean XXII, fondateur de la collégiale Notre-Dame de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon en 1333, et conservée dans le trésor de la collégiale jusqu'en 1986 puis déposée au musée Pierre de Luxembourg.
English: Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (Gard, Languedoc, France), Pierre de Luxembourg museum, Virgin and Child in ivory carved in an elephant tusk between 1310 and 1330, probably commissioned for Arnaud de Via (died in 1335), nephew of Pope John XXII, founder of the Notre-Dame collegiate church of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in 1333, and kept in the treasury of the collegiate church until 1986 then deposited in the Pierre de Luxembourg museum.
