Bahasa Melayu: Keris Bali, Keris Bugis
English: Balinese Keris (two left) and Bugis Keris. The one on the left is in the form of a squatting Hindu deity. The sheath is made of wood inlaid with pieces of gold foil and studded with coloured gemstones. The cross-piece is of ivory and shaped like a boat. The blade of the keris has seven waves and is damascened. It is more than 100 years old, together with its sheath it measures 65 cm x 21 cm. The other Balinese keris is made of horn carved in the form of a standing Hindu deity. There is a copper ring around the base. The cross-piece of the sheath is with carved faces of Hindu deities. The sheath is inlaid with ivory, finely carved with the same motifs, and has five gold bands around it. The blade of the keris is wavy and damascened with a watermelon pattern with its sheath is 65 x 21 cm wide. The Bugis keris has the sheath inlaid with gold which has carved, stylised motifs (bunga Melayu). The cross-piece is of kemuning wood. This gilded keris was used ceremonially among the royal insignia. |
