49 D My Experiences of the Island of Cyprus. Famagusta Harbour is protected by anatural reef, in which there are only oneor two openings which will allow ships ofany size through. On the shore ofFamagusta Bay is erected a big post; toget through this reef, a ship has to getthis post in line with the peak of Stavrovouni. Except in the comparatively cool weather, the haze due to the heat is so thick, thatthe peak cannot be sighted from Famagustafor a large portion of the year, but thesteamers find their way through the reef byother landmarks more conspicuous. My explanation of it is that it is thereflection of the promontory of Cape Greco, about twelve miles further east, as this isthe only object which could be refractedabove the horizon, and a point about amile south of Cape Pyla is exactly in linewith Larnaka and Cape Greco. Theextraordinary point about it is the fact thatit is always, except as stated above, visible, whether there is bright sun atLarnaka or an overcast sky. 51 CHAPTER IV. Famagusta and 5alamls. After all our belongings had been landedfrom the steamer and we had negotiatedthe customs, we bade adieu to Larnaka, andset off about 10.30 a.m. for Famagusta. Our vehicle was a comfortable carriage,an old French diligence, probably f
