lunteers. In the battle of Stone River the color-bearer of this flagwas instantly killed, and the flag fell to the ground. MosesRoark, a mere boy, instantly picked it up, and bravely carriedit through the battle. He was promoted to color-sergeant,and carried the flag through every engagement in which theregiment afterwards participated. No. 5. —Flag of the 129th Regiment Illinois Volunteers. Color-Bearer Frederic * D. Hess carried this flag in thecharge upon the rebel works at Resaca, and was one of thefirst upon the enemys breastworks, where he stood erectamid the rain of shot and shell, and waved the flag to cheerhis comrades on. While holding it in his right hand a ballshattered the arm, but he immediately raised the falling col-ors with his left, which soon shared the fate of his right arm;but with his bleeding stumps he still clung to the flag, stain-ing it with his life-blood. No. 6.-Flag of the Eighteenth New York Cavalry, Known as the Corning Light Cavalry. History un-known.
