Deutsch: Dieses Energiebudget beinhaltet, was wir über die Teile der Temperaturregelung unserer Erde wissen. Alle Energie kommt von der Sonne. Ein gleichbleibender Energieanteil muss aber wieder zurück in den Weltraum gestrahlt werden, da sich sonst die Temperatur unserer Erde ändert. Das Bild zeigt, wie Wolken den Großteil der Reflexion von Sonnenenergie (überlege dabei wie hell Wolken aussehen können -- dies ist reflektierte Energie) und ausgestrahlter Wärmeenergie, ausmachen. (Wolken funktionieren ähnlich wie einem Heizkörper in der Atmosphäre -- nur eben viel kälter als Heizkörper in einem Gebäude). Man könnte Wolken als den Thermostat der Erde betrachten. Wenn z.B. die Durchschnittsdichte niedriger Wolken größer wird, und somit mehr Energie zurückgestrahlt wird, sinkt die Temperatur der Erde. Das gleiche Ergebnis, als wenn man einen Thermostat niedriger stellen würde.
English: The Earth's Energy Budget chart shows what we know now about the parts of the Earth's temperature controls. All the energy comes from the Sun. An equal amount of energy must go back into space or Earth's temperature will change. The picture shows that clouds reflect more energy than the atmosphere or Earth's surface. Think about how bright clouds can appear -- this is reflected energy. They also radiate more energy. Clouds act like radiators in the atmosphere. They are, however, much colder than a radiator in a building.

One thing that we have learned is that clouds can act to either warm or cool the Earth. High clouds are often thin and do not reflect very much. They let lots of the Sun's warmth in. Low clouds are often quite thick and reflect lots of sunlight back to space.

You can think of clouds as one thermostat that sets Earth's temperature. If, for example, you make the low clouds a little thicker (which makes them more reflective), the Earth's temperature will drop a little. It would be as if you turned down the thermostat a little.
