Description

Rear Admiral John A. Winslow, USN (1811-1873)Winslow was promoted to the rank of Commodore as a result of his successful engagement with CSS Alabama. In 1870, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and commanded the Pacific Squadron from then until 1872. Of note, he previously saw service during the Mexican-American War and performed gallantly during the battle at Tabasco. Winslow died on 29 September 1873, soon after retiring from active naval service.
