Summary edit

Description On 9 November 1822, the brig Alligator, Lieutenant William H. Allen, recaptured several merchant ships from pirates off Mantanzas, Cuba. Allen was killed in battle, and soon thereafter, boats from Alligator captured all the pirate vessels except one schooner that managed to escape. On 19 Nov., Alligator ran around on Carysfort Reef and was later destroyed by her crew to avoid pirates from salvaging her.
