DescriptionNMSAS - Airport Pools bleaching (26634441054).jpg |
Bleached coral at Airport Reef in American Samoa, near Fagatele Bay (part of the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa). Linked to warming ocean temperatures, coral bleaching is a phenomenon that causes corals to lose the symbiotic algae that live within their tissues, making them appear brilliant white. It can be reversible if water temperatures return to normal, but prolonged bleaching can kill corals altogether. NOAA keeps close watch over our coral reef ecosystems to track bleaching events around the globe, to better understand and protect these natural treasures. Photo Credit: Wendy Cover/NOAA |
