DescriptionNMSAS - Crown Of Thorns Star fish (27761762731).jpg |
That's a big starfish -- and a big problem! In recent years, the crown-of-thorns starfish, or alamea, population has exploded in National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. These starfish eat stony corals that form the essential foundation of coral reefs, and as their population skyrockets, the reef suffers. But the sanctuary, in collaboration with the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program, has been working to remove them! Photo Credit: Greg McFall/NOAA |
