A caponier is a protected position which projects from a fortified wall. It allows defenders to shoot at attackers trying to climb the wall, without exposing themselves to fire.

This was built as part of the fort’s expansion in the 1870s. At that time it joined the south, or end wall of the fort, and the west, or back wall. It also served as a barracks, housing 25 men. When the fort was expanded again in the 1890s, it was no longer part of the fort’s outer wall, and ceased to have any defensive function.
