Looking downtime barrel, it looks smaller this way.

These guns were first built during the 1860s.

This massive weapon fired 256-pound shells which could smash through nine inches of wrought-iron armour on a enemy ironclad warship. It took nine men to operate. A good rate of fire was one shot every 1 minute 45 seconds.

The gun is mounted on a track which allowed the gun to rotate in a full circle, and fire in any direction.

The name Nine-Inch Rifled Muzzle-Loaded means that this gun fired shells which were nine inches in diameter. The ball was rifled, with spiral groves cut into its inner surface. Lugs in the side of the shell fitted into these groves. This made the shell spin, which helped it to fly in a straighter line. The shells were loaded through the muzzle, or front end.

A crane on the gun was used to hoist the shell up to the muzzle for loading.

The cartridge contained 50 pounds of gun powder.
