Description

Meet Nasrin Nahar (left) and Taslima Begum. These women mean business – owning and running their own small enterprises.

Nasrin is a tailor. When her husband lost his job she sought help from a local women's organisation, Nari O Shisu Odhikar Sangstha. The group – backed by UK aid – suggested she use her skills to run her own business, and advised her on setting up her own finances to begin trading.

Now she's earning 300 to 400 Taka a day – above average income – which has pulled her and her family out of poverty. And it's not just the money that's making a difference. Her business has given her a newfound status: "Now I have choice and decision making power," she says. "The business makes me more important to my family."

Taslima (right) is a bee-keeper. When her husband passed away – it made her finances very tight. She looked to her local women's group, ’Bondhon Nari o Shishu Odhikar Sangstha, for help. The UK aid backed organisation helped give her a loan to expand her business – doubling the number of bee-keeping boxes.

"Everyone helped me to run the business," she says. "In my community, everyone knows me as bee girl. Now I can run my business successfully. My monthly income is 8,000 Taka."
