Summary edit

Description

Epinephelus striatus specimen on display as part of the exhibit "Sailing for Science: The Voyage of the Blossom", hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

The three-masted sailing ship Blossom left the United States for Africa, the South Atlantic, and South America on a speciment collecting expedition in 1922. It returned in 1926 with more than 12,000 specimens.

Commonly called the Nassau grouper, this is a tropical marine fish found in the western Atlantic from Florida to southern Brazil. It is rare in the Gulf of Mexico, mostly along the coast of Belize. At its adult size, it is 3 feet long and weighs about 55 lbs. It is tawny in color, but those preferring deep waters can be pinkish, red, or orange-red in color. Its dark stripes feature medium spots, and the light stripes feature even lighter spots. There are a number of patterns and a forked stripe on the head.

This fish, part of the grouper family, is found around coral reefs where it feeds on small crustaceans such as crabs and small lobsters and on other fish. It is one of the largest fish to be found on the coral reef.

It is an endangered species due to overfishing.
