Two-thirds of the sanitary sewage of the City will flow bygravity to the disposal plant on Back River, about six milesfrom Baltimore. The other third will be pumped through hugeiron force-mains to the outfall sewer, an elevation of 72 feet,from which point it also will flo^\^ by gravity to the disposalplant. The pumping station building is now completed andequipped with three engines, each having a pumping capacityof 27,500,000 gallons a day. The station will house five ofthese enormous pumps, the additional two to be installed later. The difficulties of the work are doubled because of thenecessity of constructing two systems of sewers—sanitary andstorm-water—which cross and recross each other in thousandsof places.
