HABITAT GROUPS OF BIRDS. With this number of the Journal we present illustrations of twoof the new bird groups which have been mounted in the Hall of NorthAmerican Ornithology Gallery floor, north wing). These are part ofa series which is being prepared with funds provided by the NorthAmerican Ornithology Fund representing the birds of the continent intheir natural surroundings, or habitats. One of these groups represents a family of Wards Great Blue Heronin the swamps of central Florida near the Indian River. This bird,once abundant, has been almost exterminated by plume hunters. The other group illustrated in this number of the Journal is thatof the Prairie Hen and represents several couples during the matingseason, when the male goes through his peculiar antics of drumming 51

A -3 — cz? X NEW WHALES 53 and dancing. The material for this group was collected by Mr. Chap-man in the Sand Hill region of western Nebraska near the town ofHalsey last spring. Mr. Chapman considered himself very fortunate inwitnessing this performance of the Prairie Hen at close range, thussecuring the data from which the group has been constructed. The backgrounds have been painted by Mr. Bruce Horsfall, whowas sent by the Museum to make the requisite studies in the field andthe accessories have been prepared at the Museum under the directionof Mr. J. D. Figgins.
